Congratulations India Mark!
Congratulations to Egg & Dart artist, India Mark
We’re extremely proud to announce that our very own India Mark is a finalist in this year’s Archibald Prize 2016! Mark chose the frontman, Dane Taylor of local experimental pop band Shining Bird from Austinmer as the subject of her selected portrait.
“I wanted to paint Dane as simply as possible, almost as a silhouette, with a strong focus on his most distinctive features: his eyes, eye brows and his beard. The ‘painting within a painting’ is a symbolic motif used by the 17th century Dutch Masters to imply elements of narrative that aren’t surface apparent such as a state of mind, character or emotional situation. The painting behind Dane is a loose appropriation of Rupert Bunny’s painting Sea Idyll and is an ode to figurative classicism in Australian art history.” - India Mark
India Mark live in Thirroul. She is currently completing a Master of Fine Arts at the National Art School. In 2015, two of her paintings were acquired by the NAS archival collection. Earlier this year The Egg & Dart signed India Mark as a stable artist and included her work in the very popular group exhibition “Locals Lonely” in April. This is her first appearance in the Archibald Prize.
Our fingers are crossed for the winner announcement next week. Good luck India!
