The Egg & Dart is situated on the coal coast south of Sydney. Emerging organically since 2011, the gallery challenges the assumption that contemporary art is a creature of big cities. Sandwiched between Sydney and Wollongong, satellite towns like Thirroul are complex and the group of artists represented by the Egg & Dart are a reflection of the place. Director Aaron Fell-Fracasso is a maker himself, bringing a very different gallery sensibility to that of the traditional dealer. He is a peer, developing Egg & Dart as a base for creative practice, performance and discussion.

Concerned with ideas around cultural exchange, the Egg & Dart artists have ventured beyond to show in Tasmania, Casula, Canberra and Sydney. The gallery also welcomes visiting and international artists for specific projects. Co-Director Ann Eklund provides a Scandinavian connection, having introduced Swedish artist Sofi Lardner Haggstrom and Danish artist Marie Engelsvold. Bonnie Porter-Greene has recently come on board in an advisory role, bringing along her experience with microgalleries from Austria to Indonesia.

The gallery continues to host a rolling and diverse sequence of exhibitions, studio takeovers and art actions – Jock Walker set up a temporary painting studio in the gallery developing into performances that took place down local laneways and on the ocean. Rosie Deacon brought the giant KangaSue to the people of Thirroul for photo opportunities as part of her Stuffed Species show. The Egg & Dart seeks this kind of dynamism that balances return shows from represented artists with other activities by gallery friends, presenting an energetic calendar of events.
